Dear Parents,

Last week students made beautiful art using an optical allusion to draw the viewer's eye towards the center of their picture.
Here is a link to the video student's used to created their art work. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DW4wg2DdwU

Today grade 4 students continued to learn about lights and shadows.  Today we discussed changes in the size and location of Sun shadows during the day—early morning, to midday, to late afternoon.  We also investigated how opaque materials cast shadows, and predict changes in the size and location of shadows resulting from the movement of a light source or from the movement of a shade-casting object.  Finally we classified materials as transparent, partly transparent (translucent) or opaque.

In Grade 5 students reviewed the construction of their Barometers and we looked at the changes that may occur during a high pressure (sunny day) and a low pressure (cloudy day) day.
We also watched this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pL6BthjvTZ4

Grade 5 students continued learning about the weather system and completed a worksheet that explained the different types of precipitation and how they form.  Students will have more time to finish this worksheet in class before we correct it.

Grade 5 and grade 4 students continued learning about poetry today.  Students looked a few different pieces of poetry and learned about rhyming schemes.  Students created their own poems using the following rhyming schemes: aabbcc and ababcc.

Dear Parents and Gr.4's/5's,

Today grade 5's learned how to make a barometer and why we use a barometer to measure atmospheric pressure which helps us know if it is going to be a sunny day or a rainy day.

Here is a really good video to help students get a better understanding of the concept discussed today.

Grade four students did an experiment that demonstrates that light travels outward from a source and continues unless blocked by an opaque material.

Most student needed to finish their work in class but those who did not it was sent home for homework.

We also started our poetry unit where students were given a poem for you to read together and discuss the meaning and comparisons.

April 4/2017

Hello Gr. 4/5's and Parents,

Today students saw a play performed by Alberta Opera called "Hansel and Gretel".  They students' were asked to write a critic about the performance using the following criteria.

1. Open with an introduction paragraph that does the following things:
- catches the reader's attention
- identifies the thing you'll be reviewing

2.  Write at least 3 details about each aspect you want to examine:
- write several detailed sentences that prove the point you are trying to make
- use quotes or examples from the play

3.  End with a conclusion paragraph that does the following:
- restates the main idea of the review
- makes a judgement (like giving, thumbs up or down)
- recommends that the reader go to the play or not

This was an English assignment

Dear grade 4's and 5's,
Yesterday we corrected our Passé Composé worksheet found own my Google Classroom.  Students also worked on another passé composé worksheet but this time using avoir and the "forme negative".  I will put extra pages online for students to practice using passé composé, as it can be tricky.
Students completed their Science title pages, making sure each of them used all the vocabulary words plus an image to illustrate each word.
On the other side of their title page, students were asked to write down the following information.

Ce que je sais (5 examples)

Ce que je veux savoir (5 examples)

Ce que j'ai appris

Friday will be our Easter Party.  All students were asked to bring in their favourite board game and a healthy snack (if they want to).

Hello Grade 4's and Grade 5's,

Today we started working on our Passé Composé unit.  We reviewed the verbs that conjugate with Etre and those that conjugate with Avoir.  A good way to remember which verbs conjugate with Etre is DR&MRSVANDERTRAMP.  Please refer to these images to help you remember:

The Grade 4's started their Shadow and Lights unit.  Here is a list of vocabulary they need to remember:
Transparent
Translucent
Translucide
Opaque
Le soleil
La Lumière
Une Lentille
Une Prisme

The grade 5's are learning about Weather (La métérologie).  Here is a list of vocabulary they need to remember:

Dear Parents of Grade 4's & 5's,

This week the students and I continued working on verbs in the present. I taught them how to find the "infinitif" of verbs and we started working on homonyms in French.   It is always very difficult for students to remember how to conjugate verbs and they need to be practice them often to become better writers.  I will add some websites where students can play games to practice their verb conjugation skills.

In Science the grade 4's made posters about the 4 R's of Recycling and the grade 5's continued learning about chemistry, particularly the separation of solids.  The grade 5's did an experiment using rockets and different solutes to see which one is best to dissolve a candy.

The grade 5's must finish their science questions(in the gr.5's section of this blog) based on a handout I gave to Mme Brassard.  The grade 4's must finish their poster and a handout about conserving water at home.

Take care,
Natalie

Hello parents and students,

It has been a few months since I have updated my blog.  Sorry for the delay but we are now just getting back into the rhythm of school and I will continue posting every week about the subjects we are covering in class.

We have started 2 new units in Science. The grade 5's have started their chemistry unit.  The students have already done a few in-class field trips related to this unit, so we they are familiar with some of the concepts.  We started taking about mixtures and substances.  The students were asked to separated mixtures using different methods. We will continue working on our chemistry unit until the end of the month.

The grade 4's are investigating ways our waste gets recycled.  We have started a composting bin with worms and the students are encouraged to leave their organic waste in the box.  Students will be investigating how we can better take care of our environment by implanting strategies to reduce, reuse and recycle waste.

We have also started working on conjugating verbs in the present.  This should be a review for most students but I will continue to give homework regarding this topic as I feel students need more practice.
